Canon turns to Dorner for two-tiered
conveyor system
In today’s fast-paced production facilities, machines move quickly, workers are busier than ever and space is at an absolute premium. That’s why Canon Virginia – the American manufacturing facility for Canon as well as a world-class contract manufacturer – recently reached out to Dorner.
For this specific application, Canon Virginia utilizes a pick-and-place robot to deliver parts from a plastic injection mold to an operator who inspects each part before the next phase of production. To allow the operator to keep pace with the robot while making the best use of available floor space, Dorner developed a unique two-tier conveyor system that utilizes the company’s fast and flexible 2200 Series conveyor.
“The implementation of the custom built two-tier conveyor systems from Dorner throughout our molding department has allowed for better utilization of Canon’s most valuable asset – our workers,” said a mechanical engineer for Canon Virginia, Inc. “We’re very pleased with the systems and how they’ve helped us to increase output while lowering costs.”
Dorner 2200 Series
The 2200 Series is a low-profile conveyor designed to fit into small, tight spaces. It comes in a variety of belt and drive options and features V-guide tracking to true performance, with a nose bar option for small parts transfers, and rack-and-pinion belt tensioning.

New accessory adds value and flexibility
Now there’s an easy and inexpensive way to view part rate and total batch counts.
Dorner believes in adding value while moving your product. That’s why the newest plug & play conveyor accessory is multifunctional as a part counter, rate calculator, and conveyor speed indicator. It’s a perfect complement to Dorner’s automation-ready conveyors.
Using the keypad on the front of the box, any operator can choose between part counting and calculating part speed using a single input sensor or encoder. The results are displayed on an 8-digit lighted display panel. There is also a single dry output contact to signal either batch total or rate over/under speed to an external device. This compact multi-functional display is housed in a NEMA 4X/IP65 box and can be easily mounted directly to the frame of a Dorner conveyor using T-slots.
Dorner’s new Part Counter & Speed Display is yet another way of adding value and flexibility to your material handling needs.
